I Had Always Wanted to Help

March 25, 2018

Sue Crook, a retired elementary school teacher from Iowa, says what mentors everywhere say: "I had always wanted to help others after I had been helped so much."  This is the circle of mentorship.  A person receives help and then has a desire to do the same for someone else.  What most people don't realize is there is a desire to give back that is even greater than the desire to receive.  Mentors understand this concept and derive great pleasure from seeing their mentees grow and thrive under their guidance.  The saying "Tis better to give than to receive" is actually true!

The Mentor Project documents the role of mentoring and its powerful impact not only on the mentees but the mentor. During my research what I discovered was astonishing. After nearly45 in-depth interviews all the participants unanimously said being a mentor changed their life. It is now my mission to let others know the value and benefits mentors receive from giving back."
